The erstwhile East Indian Railway Company today happens to be called as the Indian Railways. In the year 1844, it was founded by the then Governor of India Lord Hardinge. Then a few experimental trains were introduced between Bombay and Calcutta. The first passenger train service was introduced in 1853, the train ran between Bombay and Thane. In the year 1854, the then Governor General of India, Lord Dalhousie, formulated a plan for a network of trunk lines connecting the principal regions of India. Today the Indian Railways caters to over 22.5 million passengers and carries over 2.8 million tons of freight every day, making it one of the largest and busiest rail networks globally. Indian Railways is also the largest employer in the world, with a workforce of over 1.5 million.
Under the Ministry of Railway, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited is a public sector enterprise. IRCTC the tourism wing of Indian Railways that works as hospitality, online ticketing and tourism partner for the Indian Railway passengers. IRCTC also has India’s largest e-commerce portal and has a number of awards to its credit. IRCTC has acclaimed to have booked 5.8 lakh tickets a day in March 2014. IRCTC also has other feathers to its cap like India’s finest luxury train The Maharajas’ Express, Mahaparinirvan Express and various other Rail Tourism Products.
